A ‘Dream Ride’ is a ten-mile passenger ride in exchange for a donation to one of the many children’s charities that the motoring club supports all over the UK.
The size of the donation depends on the car you choose. For as little as £10, you can have a ride in a great British classic. If you're looking for something 'super', expect to pay much more.
Starting in 1992, the first year saw just 12 cars on offer with around £1500 raised over the then two-day show. Now around 65-70 cars are made available and in 2016, the club raised a fantastic £44,000 during the show.
Club treasurer Andrew Lake has been involved since the beginning and whilst his Morgan Plus 4 is no longer offering rides, he will be organising the cars throughout the weekend in Hall 5.
This year cars on offer include the latest Aston Martin DB11, a Lamborghini Aventador, and a stunning Jaguar D-Type Replica. The Sporting Bears’ members, give their cars, time and fuel freely so that every penny raised goes to the chosen children’s charities.
This year’s Dream Rides will raise money for seven children’s charities - SACHD (Scottish Association for Children with Heart Disease), Derian House & CAFT (Children’s Adventure Farm Trust) located in the North West, and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in the North East.
Steps Conductive Education Centre & Tiny Tim’s Children’s Centre in the Midlands, NARA (The Breathing Charity) from the Shires, Southern-based Sullivan’s Heroes and Little Troopers in the South West will also benefit.
Show Director Lee Masters said: “Dream Rides is a fantastic ‘moving’ feature of the show and Sporting Bears brings together an amazing array of cars from classics to Super Cars. It’s a brilliant spectacle seeing and hearing the cars but more importantly the money that is raised for deserving charities is truly admirable”
“Congratulations to the club on both the 25th appearance at the NEC and reaching the £2million mark. Outstanding!”
